Why is coaching for doctors so important?
Doctors are a very resilient group of professionals who work with systemic challenges. Our workload is huge, we feel the pressure and ultimate responsibility for our patients, and we often feel unsupported and unappreciated. Levels of burnout in healthcare are high and still rising. Clinical roles are generally combined with formal or informal leadership roles. It can be hard to remember why you chose this profession in the first place, and the reality is very different from what you expected.
But there is a way to make things better.
Working in the medical culture of toughness can make it hard to ask for help. There is also little time. We have many, often conflicting, demands put upon us at work and in our private lives. There is little time to take a step back and reflect. To know what we truly want and what our next step should be.
Find out what you can do to thrive in your professional and personal life. Enjoy your work again and rescue yourself from burnout.
Allow yourself to set some time aside to focus on you in a safe and supportive environment.
Coaching for doctors can improve a range of skills and capabilities and it can have a positive effect on our wellbeing in general. It can enhance the quality of our lives and patient care.
Dr Ira van der Steenstraten is a founding member of the 'Doctors who coach Doctors' network, the immediate Past-President of the Queensland Medical Women's Society, and the Vice-President of the Doctors' Health in Queensland management committee.
